Self-Science is an avenue in which children learn to make their own positive decisions, which helps them to learn and grow on their own terms.

The methods through which Self-Science is taught are interactive rather than lecturing, where the teacher talks and the children listen and take notes. With Self-Science the children are involved in their own learning through self awareness experiments and teachings.

Yes, some subject matter needs to be taught by lecturing, and yes, many teachers have learned to overcome the boring droning that tends to happen during lectures and make things interesting enough to keep the attention of the children. But to lecture on self-awareness is probably not going to do a lot of good.

Teachers need to allow the children to get involved in their learning of social and emotional skills. With Self-Science the children get involved by actually partaking in self assessment assignments and experiments. With self assessment, the teacher is able to learn how the child feels about his or her own self-worth and can gain insight into the child’s emotional state. With this knowledge, the teacher can individually work with the child to help them to realize positive aspects of themselves as well as work on things that they feel are negative.

This means that children are taught to be knowledgeable, intelligent, about their personal emotions in order to better control them and put them to positive use. Emotions are a very powerful tool for each person, and can be a very powerful hindrance, too. Learning to recognize your emotions and learning how to make your emotions work for you as a positive tool can be a skill that determines your success in life, with jobs, with relationships, with yourself.

Emotional intelligence goes beyond standardized testing set forth by many school districts in which children are expected to learn a very specific academic curriculum in order to move ahead in school. Emotional intelligence gives children an avenue in which they are able, and willing, to make positive choices about how they think and feel about the learning process. It gives children options, and with options children are more willing to learn and grow because they have made their own choice to do so.

Teachers get a step by step curriculum to include experiments and activities to enhance student’s emotional intelligence, but these step by step procedures can be tweaked to fit into whatever the class is currently learning.

Imagine being a teacher who is able to get the class emotionally involved in every academic subject with ease, and imagine the children actually enjoying it and being happier, more balanced, well adjusted children as a result.

This is a teacher’s dream. The Self-Science approach to teaching is an approach that can have such results.
